AUGUSTA – This month, a bill sponsored by Sen. Rachel Talbot Ross, D-Portland, was signed into law by Gov. Janet T. Mills. LD 1202, “Resolve, Requiring the Department of Education to Develop Professional Opportunities for Educators in African American Studies,” will strengthen the teaching of African American studies for Maine students.
“While the inclusion of African American studies has been law since 2021, this bill will specifically help to equip Maine educators with the proper tools needed to help all of our students understand and engage with this incredibly important area of learning,” said Sen. Talbot Ross. “Through this initial investment in professional development, we are supporting our educators in teaching our shared history and ensuring that students are receiving a well-rounded, complete and truthful education.”
Once it goes into effect, the bill will provide one-time funds of $15,000 for the Department of Education to develop professional development opportunities for educators in African American studies.
As non-emergency legislation, LD 840 will take effect on July 29, 2026.
